Thank you to UCLA Screenwriting Professor Hal Ackerman who gave an very informative Chat in June. We will invite him to join us again, for another free Chat. Here’s an example of what Hal taught us: Hal Ackerman: Bob, the most important thing to think about in scene writing (and incidentally my book, Write Screenplays That Sell: The Ackerman Way, is broken down into 2 sections, The Big Picture, which is about the telling of the story and The Small Picture, which is about scene writing) is that there is one purpose for every scene that we write, and that purpose is not what you think it is - it's not for the characters to say stuff that you want them to say. It is to create an arena for the character or character to do everything that they can to get what they want in that moment. I call it the WADOOGEE: And it means: - WHAT do the characters want? - What do they DO? - To GET it? I call this the character objective, and when the 2 characters in the scene have opposing objectives, then what is created is the life blood of every scene, which is conflict. Think about 2 coyotes and one bone. Our Pitch Session with Channing Dungey was super successful with Channing requesting 8 screenplays!! She offered great insight and advice to each and every pitch, leaving everyone feeling like they know a little bit more about Hollywood and pitching. Another successful Pitch Session! Frank Chindamo not only requested some screenplays, but gave great advice on pitches and insight into pitching! Frank can be reached at funlittlemovies.com Thank you to Brad Schreiber who spent a very informative evening with us discussing adaptations and looking for source material. Brad can be reached at thewritersjourney.com We had another successful Online Pitch Session with agent David Boxerbaum of Metropolitan Talent Agency. David not only took pitches from our TWC Members, but he gave feedback and offered insight on each and every script idea. We'll keep you posted on the scripts he requested... Our Pitch Session with top manager Noah Rosen was another great night for TWC. Noah requested 6 Screenplays! And, as goes our Pitch Session events, Noah gave in depth feedback to each and every pitch. Our Online Writers Groups are well under way with our Monday Night Group. Here's an opportunity to share your work with other writers, offer insight, share personal experiences and be a part of a writing community. This group is currently full, but we will begin another Writers Group this Spring. Congratulations to TWC Member Dawn Ireland who advances to the semi-finalists in the 10th Annual Writer's Network Screenplay & Fiction Competition out of 1,700 entrants. Congratulations to TWC Member Alejandro Dardick who lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina! Alejandro's screenplay won 1st place at the El Chamizal International Film Festival in the short film category, held in Chihuahua, Mexico. Congratulations to TWC Member Al La Sorte who won the Grand Prize (out of 1,700 submissions) in the Fade In Script Contest with his screenplay, Burned. Congratulations to TWC Member Kitty Powell who is a quarterfinalist in the The American Screenwriters Association and Writer's Digest 2003 International Screenplay Competition! TWC is pleased to welcome Richard Michaels Stefanik on board! Richard hosts Megahit Movie Chats the first Monday of each month. This chat is free and available only for TWC Members. Richard will discuss things like Story Design, Plot Organization, High Concept Pitches and, of course, his theories on the Megahit Movie. The TWC Pitch Writing Workshop (required for participation in the free Pitch Sessions), will be followed by a Pitch Session with a top agent. The Pitch Session with Graham Taylor was another resounding success, with Graham requesting 6 screenplays from TWC members! Our Pitch Session with a Dimension Films Executive was a big success! Those pitching got feedback and professional insight on their material RIGHT THEN AND THERE, and 6 screenplays were requested ON THE SPOT! Good news for all! Producer Dan Halsted (Nixon, Virgin Suicides, Serving Sara) has contacted TWC Member Siobhan Wallace to acquire the script she pitched (and subsequently sent him, per his request) at our TWC Online Pitch Session. This opens doors for everyone! Mentors aid you in your craft, Creative Exercises open artistic channels, Pitch Workshops make your Pitch its best, and the Pitch Session offers opportunity. Everything you see above is included in membership, we will soon offer courses with top Screenwriting professors which will be an added fee. Writers Groups meet online in our own private Writers Café. Scheduled chats include weekly meetings with the Mentors, and open chats with other TWC Members. Interviews with Hollywoods top executives, agents and producers are in both text and audio formats. Those same interviewees participate in quarterly Online Pitch Sessions with TWC Members who have completed the TWC Pitch Workshop with Lesley Bracker. Creative Exercises open your channel of inspiration and help break through those moments when you feel blocked. Three new exercises are added each week. Articles are added weekly, and we have a large archive collection. Please click on the examples offered by clicking on the author's picture. Current TWC Mentors are Trey Ellis, Tim Herlihy, Allison Burnett (Autumn in NY, Red Meat) and Rick Dahl (Red Rock West, The Ballad of Ramblin' Jack). Past Mentors include Scott Alexander (Man on the Moon, People vs Larry Flynt, Ed Wood, Problem Child), Steve Brill (Mr. Deeds, Mighty Ducks franchise, Ready to Rumble) and Ed Solomon (Men In Black, Leaving Normal, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure).. Each month, new Mentors join us to answer your questions and engage in conversations about all forms of writing.
