Brad Schreiber:
Hollywood loves source material...the idea is if it is successful in one medium, it might work better than a spec script...this of course is a big assumption...but look at the films which win best picture oscars...often from books. Q: janis Brad, do you have any advice for getting in the buisiness without getting ripped off? I mean, everyone has somehting to offer for a price. Thats why I love this site, it is like a home away from home, and I dont have to pay at every turn. What shouldn't an aspiring screenwriter do, what is the most Taboo?: A: Brad Schreiber Well, writing something without having the underlying rights, if it is not original.. is a disaster in the making. Writing about famous people and being open to legal problems if you are critical of them, writing a famous person into your script for a cameo...very tricky and chancy Q: Katherine Is there a specific person to contact if you can't reach the author? A: Brad Schreiber Katherine, the Author's Guild. I've heard people talk about flying to other cities using personal contacts to convince the person to give you life story rights and for very little money but you have to convince them that you have access even if you are not a produced writer Q: IdahoCher And how do you do that? A: Brad Schreiber you must be enthusiastic, and inevitably, you have to please them with your ideas on how the material will change and yet still honor their intention Richard Michaels Stefanik (rms): rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:03:52 PM) Everybody see PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN? Magee (Sep 8, 2003 9:04:56 PM) It has a wider market Chris (Sep 8, 2003 9:05:04 PM) It's very fast rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:05:17 PM) You guys ready to talk story structure? Magee (Sep 8, 2003 9:06:12 PM) Jack Sparrow sailing in on his sinking boat Chris (Sep 8, 2003 9:06:18 PM) The lovers are set up. Chris (Sep 8, 2003 9:06:35 PM) The pearl is introduced. rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:06:35 PM) What is the first image? Gaylen (Sep 8, 2003 9:06:46 PM) Some action, character establishment, a little plot rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:06:49 PM) The very first image? Barb (Sep 8, 2003 9:06:54 PM) Meeting the younger girl and boy characters. and the girl rescuing the boy. Chris (Sep 8, 2003 9:06:55 PM) Ship in the fog, young girl on the bridge. rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:07:01 PM) GOOD... rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:07:11 PM) So, who is the protag? Chris (Sep 8, 2003 9:07:32 PM) I think it's Jack Sparrow, tho Will Turner is the one with an arc. Barb (Sep 8, 2003 9:07:45 PM) Will Turner. Magee (Sep 8, 2003 9:07:47 PM) The beginning scene makes you focus on the girl rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:07:52 PM) Maybe? What about the girl? Liz? Magee (Sep 8, 2003 9:08:07 PM) She takes the coin rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:08:17 PM) it is not so simple in this story. Chris (Sep 8, 2003 9:08:22 PM) She certainly ties it all together. rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:08:42 PM) You could argue that there are three (3) protags in thisstory. Chris (Sep 8, 2003 9:08:54 PM) It's kind of like the Marx Brothers stories. rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:08:55 PM) LIZ, WILL and JACK. rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:09:22 PM) They each take the lead at different parts of the movie...as we will discuss. rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:09:37 PM) But there definitely is ONE VILLAIN! Right? Chris (Sep 8, 2003 9:09:44 PM) Barbosa. rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:09:46 PM) And who isthat? Magee (Sep 8, 2003 9:09:59 PM) Captain of the skeleton crew Barb (Sep 8, 2003 9:10:37 PM) Will and Jack also have Liz's financee as an antigonist. Chris (Sep 8, 2003 9:11:01 PM) But he's not a villain.... rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:11:05 PM) Barbarosa...how is the name spelled correctly? Chris (Sep 8, 2003 9:11:22 PM) I think it's a take-off on babarosa. Chris (Sep 8, 2003 9:11:39 PM) I think they call him Barbosa.... rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:11:50 PM) Barb: Norrington creates problems in the love triangle, but he is not the real villain of the story. Barb (Sep 8, 2003 9:12:17 PM) Ok. rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:13:07 PM) It is Barbarosa that killed Will's father, tries to kill Liz, tries to kill Will, tries to kill Jack, ans lead the mutiny that stole the BLACK PEARL from Jack. rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:13:20 PM) so...no doubt he is the villain.... rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:13:58 PM) but Liz, Wil and Jack all function as the protagonist. rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:14:12 PM) Remember, Will tries to save Liz from the Pirates rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:14:28 PM) but then Liz tries to save Will from the pirates... rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:14:39 PM) this is a movie with many, many twists... rms (Sep 8, 2003 9:14:47 PM) which makes it exciting. |
